This is the beautiful remote island which lies at the extreme tip of the Beara Peninsula. The nearest village of any consequence, Allihies, is 8 miles away and Castletownbere, the nearest town, is 15 miles away, both by very tortuous roads. Dursey Island is reached by a minor dead-end road and then cable car, apparently the only one in Ireland. Click here to see the timetable. Typical birds to see on and from the island are chough, gannet, guillemot, hooded crow, lark, linnet, meadow pipit, oystercatcher, pied wagtail, raven, razorbill, rock pipit, stonechat, wheatear, wren and various gulls. American and other vagrants are possible. Some photos taken at Dursey by Cheryl can be viewed by clicking the link below. |
