Walk
No 1: A short walk around Usk
(2 miles - about 40 minutes; directions last checked (not revised) on 23.10.24) |
This short
walk is ideally suited to those who are short of time or energy and gives
a good impression of the main sights of the lovely town. |
Leave the town square by
the south east corner (i.e. the same side of the square as the Castle
Inn) and proceed along Four Ash Street. At the second bend a detour can
be made to visit St
Mary's Church if so desired. |
At the third
bend pass the former Greyhound Inn (now a private house) and continue on Chepstow Road. After a few minutes climb a metal gate on the left (just before the wooden building called "The Turnery" on the right) and go straight across the field. (This field is often boggy in places and prone to flooding in winter. If it is impassable, continue on Chepstow Road and turn left at the main road.) |
Cross a stile and climb
the steps to the main road. |
Turn right at
The Three Salmons Hotel. Take the path via the kissing gate on the left, immediately after the entrance to the Veterinary Centre. Follow the riverbank path ("Conigar Walk") to join the road at the end of the bridge. (See a photo of a commemorative plaque giving the history of the bridge and another explaining the origin of "Conigar Walk".) Cross over the road and go down New Market Street. |
Turn left at the bottom and immediately right into Mill Street opposite the King's Head Hotel. Turn left at
the bottom and left again on to Maryport Street. (In summer the large
garden directly opposite ("Courtlands") has a splendid display.) |
A
laminated A5 card showing this walk route, along with photographs, can
be easily ordered here.
The walk can be ordered more cheaply in digital format (PDF file) on the alternative Order Form. |
